The history unfolds as a chronological spine of eleven eras, each a turning point in the long pursuit of the lasting curl. The chapters below are the plan; the deeper, cross-cutting sidebars — the chemistry, the patents, the machines, the culture — thread through them.

    Antiquity–19th c.
    Before the machine. The Greek kalamistro, Roman and Egyptian curling, the wig culture of Versailles and the Georgian era, heated tongs — a three-thousand-year appetite for the curl, none of it yet permanent. Read the chapter →

    1872
    The Marcel wave. Marcel Grateau's ondulation and the heated waving iron — the crisp "Marcel wave" becomes the European salon standard. Still temporary, but fashion's first named technique. Read the chapter →

    1906
    The first permanent wave. Karl Ludwig Nessler in London winds hair on brass rods, soaks it in borax, and heats it electrically. Painful, dangerous — and for the first time, lasting. Read the chapter →

    1910s–20s
    The machine age. Suter, Calvete (Icall), Rambaud, Bishinger and the race to make the hot wave safer and faster. The patent landscape takes shape. Read the chapter →

    1924
    The bob and the flat winding. Short hair makes the spiral obsolete; Josef Mayer's croquignole flat winding makes the perm safe for the bob and mass-market. Read the chapter →

    Late 1920s–30s
    Croquignole conquers the salon. The method goes global; manufacturers, training schools, and international competitions proliferate; the great patent wars reach the courts. Read the chapter →

    1932–1945
    The cold wave and the war. Chemistry overtakes machinery; wartime rationing of metal and electricity finishes the great machines and ushers in the chemical era. Read the chapter →

    1940s–60s
